Lesdiguières, François de Bonne, duke de
(1543-1626)
   military figure, magistrate
Born in Saint-Bonnet, Dauphiné, François de Bonne, duke de Lesdiguières began a career as a magistrate when he enlisted as an ordinary soldier in the huguenot army. He rapidly rose through the ranks and soon became the leader of the Protestants in Dauphiné (1577). Named by King henry IV to be lieutenant general of the armies of Piedmont, Savoy, and Dauphiné, he seized Grenoble and defeated the duke of Savoy (Esparron, 1591; Beau-voisin, 1592). He contributed to the economic revival of Dauphiné (rebuilding roads, establishing markets and fairs), as well as the restoration of royal authority in the region. The duke de Les-diguiéres remained faithful to louis x III, fought at Saint-Jean d'Angély and at Montauban, and was made constable of France.
